Today, February 25, 2008, is the People Power Day of the Philippines.

"The People Power Revolution (also known as the EDSA Revolution and the Philippine Revolution of 1986) was a series of nonviolent and prayerful mass street demonstrations in the Philippines that occurred in 1986. The protests were the culmination of a long resistance by the people against the 20-year running authoritarian regime of then current president Ferdinand Marcos and made news headlines as "the revolution that surprised the world"

"“People Power” in the Philippines refers to the overthrow of dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986.

Famous in the West for his wife’s taste in shoewear, his administration was also known for embezzlement, corruption, despotism, fraud and rigging elections.

In 1972 President Marcos declared martial law in response to a bombing in Manila that killed killed nine civilians. Marcos had his political opponent Benigno Aquino arrested, and though no evidence connected him to the crime, a military tribunal found him guilty and sentenced him to death by firing squad. The sentence was later mitigated, but he remained in prison for seven years. In jail Aquino suffered a heart attack and was granted leave to receive surgery in the United States.

Aquino and his wife Corazon did not return to the Philippines for 3 years. In that time both were active speakers against the Marcos government, which had amended the Constitution in the 1970s and 80s to extend martial law, increase the scope of Marcos’s power and the length of his term.

Benigno Aquino returned to Manila on August 21, 1983. He was assassinated “by a lone gunman” according to the government, the moment he stepped off the airplane.

He was reportedly called “The Greatest President we never had,” by Liberal Party leader Jovito Salonga.

There was never proved any direct evidence linking Marcos to the assassination, but it sparked widespread discontent with the Marcos administration. In November 1985 Marcos announced Presidential elections to take place in February. Benigno Aquino’s widow Corazon ran against Marcos. The Marcos government claimed to have won the election, but accusations of extreme voter fraud and massive public demonstrations against his rule combined with military opposition and U.S. pressure forced Marcos to resign on February 25, 1986.

Today People Power Day is not one day but 4, from February 22—marking the beginning of the demonstrations—to February 25, when Marcos stepped down.

Marcos loyalists attempted to bring down the Corazon Aquino administration, but were unsuccessful. President Aquino was the first woman and the first Asian to deliver a keynote address before the United States Congress."

[ According to James Delrojo, there are five ingredients of HAPPINESS. He said that we would be COMPLETELY happy if we have these five ingredients...Hmmnnn.. in my case, I think I still have to work on a little with these five....how about you?...try to read and ponder each ingredient....to see if you really achieve true HAPPINESS.]

1. Gratitude
Happy people are grateful and appreciative of what they have, whatever that may be. They always find something good and positive in their circumstances. This attitude of gratitude is the foundation stone on which happiness is built.

By way of contrast unhappy people are not grateful or appreciative of anything in their world. They are constantly focused on the fact that there is something that they don't have. They live in lack and as a result their spirit is lacking. Nothing ever makes them truly happy.

2. Passion
Happy people are passionate people. It could be a passion for knowledge. It could be a passion for success. It could be a passion for helping others. It could be any passion at all, as long as it truly inspires the person to become more than they are now.

The unhappy person is devoid of passion. They are complacent or apathetic. They have no inspiration in their life, nothing to urge them to evolve and grow into a more developed person. As a result they tend to go around in circles; each year is similar to the year before. They are in a spiritual rut.

3. Challenge
Happy people have a challenge that they are pursuing. It could be a purely spiritual challenge such as finding enlightenment or it could be a commercial challenge such as building a successful business. It could be a sporting challenge such a winning a medal in the Olympics or it could be a career challenge. The important ingredients of the challenge are that it is in the area of the person's passion and that it is big enough to be inspiring but not so big as to be overwhelming.

The unhappy person avoids challenges. They are waiting for someone or something to give them happiness. They believe that happiness is outside of them and that any form of challenge is work to be avoided.

4. Faith

Happy people have faith that they will achieve the destination that their challenge requires. They have faith that they have the mental and spiritual strength to take on their challenge and to grow in whatever way they need to grow in order to succeed. They have faith that every experience has its purpose and that something positive can be gained from it, even if the experience is a bad experience or a setback.

Unhappy people are lacking in faith. On the surface they are seeking happiness but they don't really believe that they will ever find it, and they are right. You can't find happiness if you don't have faith.

5. Journey
Happy people are on a journey to their challenging destination. They have a purpose for getting up each day. They have a purpose for the things they do each day. They are doing the things required to follow their passion and they take joy from that fact.

Unhappy people are stagnant. They are not on any journey to anywhere. They are milling around, marking time. They are waiting for the world to give them happiness and they will have to wait forever because happiness requires you to take action, to grow, and to move forward in life.

[ Last 2004, I went for a vacation in Rosario, Agusan del Sur in Mindanao. I stayed in my aunt's house. At first, I didn't see the beauty of the place because of the thick fog that covered the place almost everyday. One day, I woke up with the sun shining so bright. While I was looking afar, I saw a mountain that looked like a pregnant woman lying in bed. I was already staying there for 3 weeks but that was my first time to see the mountain. So, I asked my cousin why the mountain didn't exist everyday ( a silly question)? She laughed and told me that it's the fog which made the mountain unseen in most days. Moreover, she told me the name of the mountain, Mt. Diwata, and its legend.]

Legend: Diwata was a woman living in a remote place. She was very pretty but poor. The king loved and married her. She was very braved that she helped fight the place against enemies. She fought even she was pregnant; unfortunately, she was killed. Because the king loved her so much, he named the place ' Diwata'. Years later, the villagers noticed that the place became mountainous and it resembled a pregnant woman; so, from Diwata they changed it to Mount Diwata.

....{ When I got to see it, it really looked like a pregnant woman. And, what adds to its beauty is the waterfalls in its feet? In fact, a swimming pool, a garden and kiosks are made near the waterfalls for the people to enjoy and relax while visiting the mountain...So, if you wanna witness the beauty of the mountain, you better go there also}.

MT. DIWATA " 'diwata' , the tagalog word for 'fairy'" covers the provinces of Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur. It serves as a major watershed for the CARAGA region and the provinces of Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur. Substantial areas of its lowland forest is threatened by logging and land conversion.

Threatened endemic species in Mt. Diwata:

-Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi)
-Mindanao Bleeding-heart (Gallicolumba criniger)
-Philippine Kingfisher (Ceyxme lanurus)
-Blue-capped Kingfisher (Actenoides hombroni)
-Wattled Broadbill (Eurylaimus steeri)
-Philippine Leaf Bird (Chloropsis flavipensis)
-White Lauan (Shorea contorta)
-Red Lauan (Shorea negronensis)
-Mangkono (Xanthostemon verdugonianus)
-Yakal (Shorea astylosa)
-Bagtikan
(Parashorea plicata)

-Tangili (Shorea polysperma)

[Bohol is one of the most visited places in the Philippines ...I'm from Bohol but I'm even longing to tour around the island and to visit all its fantastic sceneries, rare animals & flowers etc...Now, if you wanna see also how beautiful Bohol is, kindly click this site: http://www.bohol.ph/gallery.php ...for sure you'll also long to visit this beautiful island.]

Nature. Although quite small, the nature and landscape of Bohol is quite diverse. Of course you can see the world famous Chocolate Hills, but also hills covered with trees and surrounded by ricefields in terraces, the 'man made' forest, and through all if this are woven a large number of larger and smaller streams, and an occasional waterfall.

Daily Life. Just some images from daily life on Bohol, both the daily chores as the highlights of life.

Monuments. Scattered throughout Bohol, you will be surprised by the number of old churches and other buildings that still remind us of the centuries of Spanish domination. Although sometimes somewhat dilapidated, and badly in need of restauration, they remind us of our past.

Underwater. Bohol is a true diver's paradise, and although there is plenty to see above sealevel, at least half of the visitors specifically come to Bohol to take a peek under the waves.

Beaches. Bohol is famous for its white beaches, with which it is so richly blessed. Most famous is of course Alona Beach, but many more, more remote and more quiet can be found by the adventurous visitor.

From Outer Space. NASA kindly provided us with a number of pictures of Bohol taken from outer space. Nothing much man-made to be seen, but they are not your everyday touristic snap!

Flowers. No Boholano house is complete without a garden, and you will be surprised how even the simplest houses can be surrounded with numerous beautiful orchids.

Food. Most of the Boholanos still grow and eat their own food. Collected here are pictures of some of the types of food you can expect to find.

Animals. On Bohol, you will be surrounded by animals, mostly domestic. But Bohol is also home to the tiny tarsier, one of the worlds smallest primates.

Transport. There are many ways to go from A to B in Bohol. Of course, you have the ubiquitous Jeepney, but local ingenuity knows no limits if it comes to inventing new means of transportation.

Hotels & Resorts. On Bohol, you can find resorts in various price classes. From world class facilities, where you can find every luxury desired, to the very simple cottages, where even streaming water is not included...

Fiesta Time. Bohol is well known for its many fiestas and festivals. Especially during the month of May, in which not a single day passes without a fiesta somewhere on the island.

Historic Photographs. It is hard to imagine what Bohol looked like a hundred years ago, but old photographs can help us get an impression. A lot has changed, but some things still remain suprizingly the same...

Fruits. In Bohol, you can find plenty of fruits, some well known and common, such as the Mango, some less well know, but still delicious

Vegetables. Besides fruits, you can also find a choice of vegetables on Bohol.

Delicacies. Pasalubong, something to bring home as gifts after a trip is a well-known Filipino tradition. Always good are local varieties of snacks. Each place has its own specialty.

Handicrafts. Philippine handicrafts, such as woodcarvings or basket-ware, make excellent pasalubong (gifts to bring home) or souvenirs.
